The Calgary Police Commission said Monday that Carra has voluntarily stepped back from his role on the civilian oversight body while he addresses a “personal matter.”

According to a statement from Calgary police, officers were made aware of a recent incident involving a member of the public and an elected official. Police did not say the nature of the incident.

“In the interest of transparency and best practices, we have reached out to the Edmonton Police Service to request they lead an independent investigation of the circumstances,” said CPS.

In a message to Postmedia, Carra said he can’t confirm or comment on anything at this point but intends to speak about it soon.

The police commission said that Carra’s position is being held for him but he will not be able to participate in any meetings or access any confidential commission information until the situation is resolved. They would not provide any more details out of respect for Carra’s privacy.

Carra was appointed to Calgary Police Commission after his re-election in the municipal election in October 2021. The councillor was first elected to represent Ward 9 in 2010.
