Manchester City remain keen on Gavi as his contract saga plays out in Barcelona, but Liverpool too are admirers.

The Spanish midfielder is among the bright lights at the Nou Camp, being one of the latest graduates of their famed academy. He has partnered Pedri in the middle of the park and has become one of the hottest prospects in Europe, thus attracting attention from elsewhere.

Barcelona remain in financial difficulty and have seen some of their young stars poached as they opted to turn down contract offers. The Catalans are in discussions with Gavi as they look to tie down the 17-year-old to a new deal and secure his long-term future.

The teenager is currently on £20,000-a-week and Nou Camp bosses have offered the teenager a £1.7million a year salary, which would see his weekly pay rise to £33,000-a-week. The Premier League’s leading duo are keeping tabs on the situation however.

Pep Guardiola has said previously: “He is fantastic, just like Ansu Fati or Pedri. It shows that there is a lot of future and very good work in the youth system there.” The Catalan is seeking a new face in midfield after losing Fernandinho whilst Jurgen Klopp may look to replace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain should he move on.

Already Gavi is part of the Spanish set-up and Luis Enrique highlighted the interest in the youngster as he said on the player: “He’s an erupting volcano… It’s hard not to fall in love with Gavi”. The 17-year-old has already won 10 caps for his country and recently scored his first international goal.

Will Gavi remain at Barcelona? Have your say in the comments!

Barcelona president Joan Laporta said on his situation this weekend: “We are optimistic. We obviously want Gavi to continue at Barça. We are close to reaching an agreement. “It’s more special for us because he [Gavi] comes from our youth ranks. We want Gavi to stay. The player and his agent want it too.”

Previously he has confessed his concern at the drawn out discussion, saying: “Yes, because we don’t understand. He’s a player we all like, he is 17 years old, has a present and a great future at Barca, and we do not understand why his representative is playing and comparing. I think the club’s proposal, within our salary levels, is more than acceptable.”

Gavi played 47 times for Barcelona last term, scoring twice for Xavi’s side. The Spanish giants are undergoing a transitional period but they remain focused on retaining their academy star, who only made his debut less than 12 months ago against Getafe.
