The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo began providing an animal-friendly shot to several animals earlier this week. The first animals scheduled to receive a first dose include two of the zoo’s western lowland gorillas, a snow leopard, two tigers, a Bactrian camel and several lemurs.

The vaccine was developed and donated by U.S. company Zoetics.

Since the start of the pandemic, zoo staff have worn personal protective equipment around all species. The zoo also increased the distance between visitors and animals in many places.

According to a news release from the zoo, a total of 66 animals will be vaccinated with three doses.
